Radio Active

Radio Active (RA), is the first and only functional community radio station in Bangalore. Housed in Mahaveer Jain college, RA operates currently on 107.8 MHz and radiates its programmes at 100 W.

With FM technology, it is accessible to the common woman, and aims to engage its communities with relevant programming on areas like health, education, legal awareness, sports, spirituality, neighbourhood events and so on.

While RA began its journey more than a year and a half ago, community participation has not taken off as expected. Further, the radio station is doing only three and half hours of original programming a day.

Maraa, sees a lot of potential in this station, and feels that we can contribute.

Our contract with RA involves mobilizing communities which are interested in engaging with the radio station, and would like to use it as a tool to address their concerns. Further, as media practitioners, we create linkages with individuals and groups who would like to volunteer or make programmes for RA. We also make programmes ourselves, as and when we have the bandwidth.

Our current strategy is to identify civil society institutions who are doing ground work and need communication outlets for greater leverage, and then link them to Radio Active. The second thread in our strategy is to identify individuals who are interested in radio, and who have things they want to talk about, and link them to Radio Active. The individuals are usually identified through Residential Welfare Associations, friends, and friends of friends and so on!

Check out some of our programs and send us your feedback.

  1. Namaskara,

I am Vinay from Hasiru Usiru. I feel that radio would be a very useful tool in our campaign to preserve Banaglore’s commons and promote sustainable transport.

Would it be possible to collaborate with Radio Active for the same?

    Please do let me know.

    Thanks,
    Vinay.
